This course is designed to equip caregivers with the necessary skills to effectively manage challenging behaviours exhibited by senior clients or family member, specifically anger. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the underlying causes of anger in older adults, develop effective communication strategies, and learn practical de-escalation techniques.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the basic age-related physical, health, and cognitive changes that may affect the elderly, such as mobility issues, sensory decline, chronic conditions, and dementia. 

  • Understand the impact of these changes on the behaviour and well-being of elderly clients or family member.

  • Identify potential triggers for challenging behaviours in elderly clients, including environmental factors, health issues, and communication barriers.

  • Demonstrate appropriate and empathetic responses to various challenging behaviours, using techniques like calm communication and de-escalation strategies.

  • Develop realistic expectations about the practical aspects of care delivery, recognizing what can and cannot be changed.

  • Know when and how to seek professional help to identify the causes of challenging behaviours and manage them effectively
